Film award for City College students

22 January 2008

Two Performing Arts students from City College Brighton and Hove recently won a Best Comedy award for their short film You Hussy at the Digitally Born Kids Film Festival at Brighton's Sallis Benney Theatre. Jade Billington and Natasha Newington, who wrote and performed their own script, made the film with help from Media students Max Goldini and Ayman Shaker. Digitally Born Kids is a group of young film enthusiasts based in Brighton and Hove who have come together to give 12 to 18-year-olds a chance to get their films shown in public. The festival, now in its third year, received more than eighty films from all over the UK, which were judged by the ten-strong panel made up of young people. Jade and Natasha's film concerns two catty teenage schoolgirls who get their comeuppance after being nasty to a female classmate.

'We didn't even realise we'd been nominated so we were really shocked and excited to win. At City College, we've learnt a lot about professional etiquette, focussing on what you're doing and not letting being in the spotlight go to your head. I think that helped prepare us when it came to making this film.'

Digitally Born Kids was set up as a result of research by Video Production, Education and Screening Company Junk TV which showed that there was a need for young filmmakers to get their work screened. The festival is run by Junk TV and Arts and Media Training Company, Lighthouse. Simon Wilkinson, Director of Junk TV, says:

'Jade and Natasha's film was appreciated by the judging panel because it was a simple, well-observed idea made with very few resources. It had great dialogue, was very funny and brilliantly performed.'
