Hampton Court Accepts Groundbreaking City College Garden

19 March 2007

Horticulture students from City College Brighton and Hove have had a design for a small tropical garden accepted to appear at the world-renowned Hampton Court Flower Show this summer. It's the first time that a tropical garden has featured in the 'Small Gardens' category.

The garden's designer, Beth Rogers, who is studying Horticulture and Garden Design at the College, says:

'It's slowly sinking in that my garden design will be brought to life at Hampton Court and it's amazing that it was a visit to the show last year that inspired me to study garden design. I would never have guessed that a year later, I'd be there exhibiting!"

"My inspiration for the tropical garden came from my travels around Asia and I hope to evoke a sense of the Far East. I wanted to design a secret garden in the jungle, feeling the sense of peace and tranquillity I experienced in the temple gardens there. The paisley bedding was inspired by Indian textiles - on the garden design course we are encouraged to look at all the arts for inspiration. It's an exciting opportunity for all the students to work together at College to create this sanctuary which will inspire and challenge people to see what could be possible in a small urban space.'

Co-designer Julia Harding says:

'Having a digital graphics background, combining horticulture with my design skills for Hampton Court has been creative bliss! I've always loved exciting tropical planting and hope to specialise in this area after my studies.'

Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins, a former student at the College, says:

'I'm really chuffed for the students and think that it's a bold move to attempt something that hasn't been done before at the show. Having recently met some of the students involved, I've no doubt that they'll rise to the challenge and I'd be delighted to offer any help or advice if they need it.'

Sponsorship for the garden is coming from two local companies managed by former City College students ? local houseplant nursery House of Plants and Brighton-based on-line currency exchange business, 4X Currency Corporation.
