Pupils from Hove Park School have been on a fundraising blitz involving raffles, cake sales, prom nights and family fun days so that students from City College Brighton and Hove can build a much-needed kitchen to help children in one of Kenya's most deprived areas. The £700 that has been raised is kick-starting a new fundraising appeal to continue a project to provide homes and basic infrastructure for people whose children currently live in the slum areas of Nakuru. The current cooking facilities that the students aim to replace at the Prisons Primary School in Nakuru are crude charcoal burners in a dilapidated shack. Sharon Dowds, City College's Learning Support Assistant who accompanied students on their first trip to Nakuru last Summer, says:
'Being in Nakuru back in July was a very humbling experience but the City College students found it really life-affirming and were so chuffed that their hard work was making a real difference to the Kenyans' lives. Their efforts plus the fundraising support we've had from Hove Park School shows just how much young people care about less fortunate students thousands of miles away.'

Charmian Hartley, Hove Park School's International Director, adds:
'The idea to raise funds for Prisons Primary School came from one of our students which really helped motivate everyone. They'd seen a presentation in assembly about the conditions in Nakuru which really brought it home to them what a difference their fundraising could make and they therefore related to the project on a much more personal level."
