A free seven-week pre-employment training course at City College Brighton and Hove which included a week's work experience has ended up leading to permanent employment at the Umi Hotel on Kings Road for jobseeker Stuart Milsom. The course was provided through Tourism Futures, an initiative funded by Brighton & Hove City Council and supported by a range of organisations and businesses from the sector. Tourism Futures' aim is to provide training to Brighton and Hove's Retail and Tourism industry. Stuart (32), who had been unemployed for a demoralising sixteen months, says:
'For me personally, it was a chance to update some of the skills that I already had such as First Aid and Health & Safety. Also, because I'd been unemployed for so long, the week's work experience at the hotel made me feel like I could be useful again and wasn't just sat at home staring at four walls. The course was really hands-on, we weren't treated like kids and there was a lot of input both ways from the students and the tutors which made it a very good way to learn. The fact that it's led to a job shows how effective these courses can be if you apply yourself.'

Emma Blakiston, Umi Hotel's Operations Manager, says:
'I visited City College and met quite a few of the students and decided on three suitable candidates that I could provide work experience for. Two were on reception and one was in the restaurant and from that initial trial week period, we decided that Stuart was a really good candidate to join our reception team and once he finished his City College course, we were keen to offer him full-time employment. It definitely proves that's its really worthwhile for local companies to support this type of training.'
The College will be running another Tourism pre-employment training course for jobseekers in October. For more details, contact Caroline Wilcock on 01273 667788 x 527.
