Julie's ?Zebra and Pigs' Selected for Top Art Prize

20 January 2005

'Zebra and Pigs', a painting by City College Brighton and Hove Art tutor Julie McDermott, has been selected for the prestigious Hunting Art Prizes exhibition at the Royal College of Art in February. The exhibition is acknowledged to be one of the top three annual competitions in the United Kingdom.

Julie's work has evolved from a fascination with the behaviour and spectacle of animals in complex groups and the visual similarities of large scale human enterprises as depicted through art history. Julie's star is clearly in the ascendant ? she was recently selected by Ann Robinson to appear in The Discerning Eye exhibition at London's famous Mall Galleries and was winner of the £1000 Meynell Fenton prize.

Julie feels that her work at City College has helped her develop as an artist:

'By teaching the subject, you keep researching and practicing drawing. It informs and improves your painting?being involved in teaching keeps you on your toes.'

Notes to Editors: The standing of the Hunting Art Prizes continues to grow year on year and this is reflected in the willingness of leading figures in the art world to judge the competition. As a result it attracts a wide range of entries, including leading established artists, promising newcomers and talented amateurs. It has proved particularly important as a vehicle for up and coming artistic talent to achieve recognition and past prize winners have gone on to enjoy significant success. The exhibition is at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 from 14th to 27th February 2005.
