Local Achievers Awarded at City College

2 October 2006

Now in its second year, The Achiever of the Year Awards provided a unique opportunity to celebrate student achievement from right across the curriculum areas at City College Brighton and Hove. Local people who excelled in such diverse fields as carpentry, hairdressing, catering, photography, engineering and performing arts all received awards with one overall winner receiving the accolade of 'Achiever of the Year'.

This year, the 'Achiever of the Year' award and prize of a holiday for two in Prague went to Sophie Luffman. The prize was donated by Red Seven who have just opened a travel bureau at the College. Sophie came to City College from Tideway School, Newhaven and much of her artwork was burnt in the arson attack on the school in April 2005, so she had very little work to bring to her initial interview. But Sophie's achievement during 2005 and 2006 on the GNVQ Intermediate Art and Design course was like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. She worked hard at every project and put in all the hours that she could to produce work of outstanding quality. In every unit on the BTEC GNVQ course, Sophie achieved Distinction grade. Throughout the year, Sophie achieved 100% punctuality, met all of her coursework deadlines and attended every lesson. Sophie's final piece of work for the end-of-year show in the summer was a stunning installation made of textile panels based on the idea of light which was much admired by all who saw it during the exhibition in June. In all respects, Sophie was a model student and continues to demonstrate these qualities on the BTEC National Diploma Course in Art and Design that she has just enrolled on.

Sophie says:

'Coming to City College to study Art has really helped build up my confidence. I was very shy when I first started but I'm a lot more outgoing now. Winning the award came as a complete surprise and I was overwhelmed when I went up to collect it.'

City College's celebration of student achievement is part of its overall drive to provide much-needed skills and training to the local workforce. There are still many residents in Brighton and Hove who have significant basic skills needs and more than 40,000 adult residents do not hold a qualification. The service sector nature of the local economy means that there is a high demand for people at all levels to have good customer service and interpersonal skills. The city currently doesn't have sufficient numbers of skilled construction workers to deliver a scale of development likely to exceed £2 billion pounds. Good literacy and numeracy skills are also increasingly required to work in the city's modern labour market. As Brighton and Hove's main Further Education provider, City College has a key responsibility to meet the training needs of the city.
