A variety of businesses sponsored the prizes at the inaugural 'Achiever of the Year' awards ceremony at City College Brighton and Hove on Thursday 6th October.
City College currently engages with over 2,000 employers and the ceremony celebrated student achievement in areas such as 'skills for life', retail, digital design, hairdressing, catering and construction. Sponsors included Jessops, Southern Water, Sussex Promotions, Invensys APV and Barlow Electrical Engineers.

City College Chairman Martin Perry says:
"These awards are very important for us as it provides a unique opportunity to celebrate student achievement from right across the curriculum areas at City College. It is also significant for us to have local businesses involved in sponsoring the prizes as this illustrates how our relationship with employers is continually evolving as we strive to meet the needs of Brighton and Hove's economy. What really matters, however, is just how inspiring it is to see students achieving their goals and making the most of the opportunities that we are presenting to them. These are some of the city's most exceptional young people and they've often achieved against the odds.'
Graham Light, Project Manager of Invensys APV in Crawley, an international supplier of process engineering and automation solutions to the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, says:
'Our company feels that it's important to recruit locally and it was a pleasure to sponsor a prize in this Awards Ceremony. A high standard of people is needed in local industry and City College is doing really well in providing this.'
Award-winning Engineering student James Bruzas says:
'I've really appreciated my tutors' support at the College and this award is the best thing that's happened to me in ages.'
Award-winner Amanda Haylett, who is studying Information Technology at the College, says:
'I was shocked and extremely pleased to win the award and my parents were delighted. It means a lot to me that all the hard work I've done is being acknowledged.'
Darren Barlow, Managing Director of Barlow Electrical Engineers, says:
'Barlow's are pleased to be able to further their already close working relationship with the College by sponsoring this award. We view the College as an integral part of our training program to broaden the company's skills base.'
There are still many residents in Brighton and Hove who have significant basic skills needs and more than 40,000 adult residents do not hold a qualification. The service sector nature of the local economy means that there is a high demand for people at all levels to have good customer service and interpersonal skills. The city currently doesn't have sufficient numbers of skilled construction workers to deliver a scale of development likely to exceed £2 billion pounds. Good literacy and numeracy skills are also increasingly required to work in the city's modern labour market. As Brighton and Hove's main Further Education provider, City College has a key responsibility to meet the training needs of the city.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity for Dr. Norman Boyland, Chairman of the Sussex Learning and Skills Council, to officially present the College with their Action for Business Colleges accreditation. The accreditation is a Learning and Skills Council kitemark to employers signalling that the College provides services that are responsive to local employers' needs. To achieve the kitemark, the College had to demonstrate its commitment, capacity and ability to deliver and shape provision to local employer's training and development requirements.
