Luke's 'Renegade' hits the streets

20 June 2011

Luke Campion, a Games Development student at City College Brighton and Hove, has scripted, drawn and published his own stunning graphic art comic 'Renegade' using ideas he explored during a module in his course.

Renegade is now available at Brighton's well-known comic mecca, Dave's Comics on Sydney Street. 'I found Renegade highly sophisticated with a great sense of irony and the quality of both the graphics and the storyline is really outstanding', says Luke's tutor, Shaun O'Shea. 'The fact that he created it using the Flash CS4 animation programme which isn't really designed for making comics just shows how hard-working and determined Luke was to see this project through to such a high standard.'

'As part of the course, we had to work on a 'Graphic Narratives' unit which led me into exploring genres like 'film noir', gangster films and movies such as Bladerunner and Apocalypse Now which have had a lot of influence in the games industry', explains Luke 'I was also influenced by graphic novels such as Frank Miller's Sin City and really liked his black and white silhouette style of illustration. All the storyboarding and character development work I did during this time started giving me ideas and through the 3-page comic that I had to produce as part of my coursework, I was able to develop it into a complete story which is how Renegade came about. It was my goal to get a comic out before the course ended so I was really happy to see Renegade coming back from the printers looking as I hoped it would.'

Regarding his Games Development course, Luke adds: 'For students who maybe haven't done so well at school, there's a really good support system here, you're able to focus on something you're passionate about, be surrounded by like-minded people and you're guided by tutors who really want you to succeed.'
