Foundation Degree Music Production students at City College Brighton and Hove recently got some industry insights from legendary record label Polydor, currently home to such internationally famous acts as Take That, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and Snow Patrol. Paul Walmsley, the label's A & R Administration Manager, says:
'I did a similar course a number of years ago which was primarily aimed at getting students into the music industry on the label side of things so I see the value of such courses. It's great to come here and meet students, pass on my knowledge and experience and help in some way.'

Referring to the industry's sharp dip in profits in recent years, Paul adds:
'The under-riding hope for the music industry is that music plays such an important part in peoples' lives. Although sales of recorded music are down, record companies have had to be cleverer and are making themselves adept at making money from other revenue streams such as live income, advertising and merchandising. There are always opportunities for talent in this industry and it prides itself in finding new talent and nurturing it. There's the chance that some of City College's Music Production students are the record-makers and hit-makers of tomorrow and that is why the record industry will always back courses like this that are giving academic qualifications for those who want a career in music.'
Matthew Hodson, Course Leader for the FdA in Music Production says :
'It's always great introducing the students to more industry professionals within the course. Students get a real grasp of what is happening in the ever changing climate of the music industry and for most, it helps to identify how they can apply their own skills in order to develop and successfully work within the industry. The course is based around feeding current and relevant music industry practices directly into the coursework and it's important that we're all aware of how the industry is changing from all perspectives.'
Student Alex Winter says:
'It was a good insight into how down-to-earth the record industry is and how they definitely understand what's going on at the ground level of the music scene. It's also great to hear about the business side and the process of how bands get signed and from a producer's point of view, it was interesting to find out how the label is involved with producers in different kinds of production deals and how record companies work alongside songwriters and producers.'
