National Beauty Success for City College

1 June 2005

City College Brighton and Hove Beauty Therapy students have triumphed in the Skills Challenge Beauty National Final at Warwickshire College. Veronica Jimenez-Ortega, with her model Sarah Williams, won Gold in the Level 2 Beauty Therapy Category. Veronica competed against winners from other regional finals, demonstrating her practical application of waxing, facial treatment, manicure and make-up, before having her work judged by a panel of industry experts. The judges were so impressed with the standard of the finalists that they commented they would be happy to employ any of them.

Veronica said that she was 'over the moon' to win:

'I'm really honoured. I can't believe I have won such a prestigious competition. I was really nervous as the other competitors were all winners of their regional finals.'

Tutor Sarah Baldey was full of praise for Veronica and her model Sarah Williams:

'It felt fantastic - to win a national competition was amazing. The experience of competing and winning in the Skills Challenge gives the students a great feeling of achievement.'

National Skills Competitions are competitions that are not run by 'Skills Challenge' but which nevertheless are part of the range of skills competitions that are on offer. The winners of some these competitions have the opportunity to represent the UK at the WorldSkills Competition. At this event, which is held every 2 years, young people from 39 Countries compete to win gold, silver and bronze medals. The next WorldSkills Competition will be held in Helsinki, Finland this year. Colleges already play a major part in the National Skills Competitions. Most of the competitors will have trained in further education, and many of the technical experts come from FE.
