Gardening enthusiasts from across the UK are now benefiting from the expertise of two tutors from City College Brighton and Hove's Horticulture department.
Garden Design Tutor Lucy Cotes is appearing alongside garden guru Diarmuid Gavin in the series 'Garden School' on BBC2. In the series, eight career changers who want to work in gardening professionally have been given a unique opportunity to realise their dreams at RHS Garden Wisley. They've followed a five-month programme of informal learning within Wisley and across the industry plus project work devised by Diarmuid Gavin and the production team.

Lucy says:
'There was a strong correlation with my work at City College as I was teaching the students in the programme exactly what I teach students here. I also used drawings from City College students to show the 'Garden School' students what I wanted them to achieve. Everyone involved in the programme was lovely and it was a wonderful experience which made me feel inspired and refreshed about teaching garden design.'
'Garden School' producer Richard Trayler-Smith says:
"Filming when your presenter has no syllabus and no timetable and doesn't always turn up when expected is no joke but someone as unorthodox as Diarmuid cannot work any other way. He has great ideas, knows how to grab people's attention and knows on whose expertise to call at the right time. Lucy Cotes was one of those people. She helped enormously in giving the students confidence in drawing - an area they weren't always too sure about."
Meanwhile, Horticulture Tutor Julie Hollobone has recently started a regular column in the popular glossy national 'Gardens Monthly'. Julie's 12 part series 'How to Garden' takes gardeners through all the subjects they need to understand to get the best from their garden. Julie says:
'I've really enjoyed writing 'How to Garden' and it reflects a lot of what I teach at City College. The interaction with students and the kind of questions they ask has helped me focus on what to include in the column every month.'
Editor Liz Dobbs says:
'I'm delighted to welcome Julie Hollobone as a regular contributor to Gardens Monthly. 'How to Garden' is very popular with our readers and builds into an essential introduction to the principles of gardening. We've all learnt such a lot from Julie in the Gardens Monthly office that I wanted all our readers to benefit from her practical advice and clear explanations, if anyone has the opportunity to attend one of Julie's courses I would recommend they grab the opportunity with both hands - she's a natural communicator.''
