New City College Course Tackles Leadership Skills Shortage

5 October 2006

City College's new 'An Introduction to Leadership' course aims to help delegates understand the theory of management and then how to apply this theory to their own personal management scenario. The course also examines a manager's most valuable tool - communication - and explores how communication can be used to both help or hinder a situation.

There is currently an acute need for this type of training. For years, politicians, economists and business leaders have bemoaned Britain's productivity gap with the US and its key European rivals. By the government's own reckoning, UK productivity, or output per worker, lags behind that of the US by 42%, France by 14% and Germany by 7%. While a lack of skills, long-term investment and innovation play their part, poor management is considered a key factor in Britain's performance. The Council for Excellence in Management & Leadership have described current management and business leadership development as being 'dysfunctional' and it has concluded that the UK's economic performance is being held back by a shortage of appropriate and practical leadership skills.

With 20 years experience of working in the service sector and in training & development management, Course Trainer Sarah Thompson regularly passes on her knowledge of leadership skills to major clients such as Norwich Union and First Choice. Sarah says:

'Leadership in the noughties is all about the followers - after all, a leader cannot be considered a leader without them!! Understanding your team and adapting your personal style to suit the differing needs of both the individual and the unique situation is a sure way to get great results quickly. Its not okay to have a one-size-fits-all approach to management any more - instead managers need to be able to quickly and easily flex to the needs of their team - this is how to get exceptional results through people.'
