New College theatre group stages 'Beauty and the Beast'

30 November 2009

Students based at City College Brighton and Hove's Connaught Adult and Community Learning Centre have formed a new acting troupe, the Connaught Theatre Company. Their first production will be Beauty and the Beast. Unlike Disney's sanitised version, 'Beauty and the Beast - a Fairy-tale Thriller' by Laurence Boswell, is based on the original 18th Century French fairy tale. This is the timeless tale of a brave young girl who leaves her beloved, if chaotic, family to discover the mysteries of passion, imagination and love in the glorious Palace of the Beast. Using songs and dance, the Connaught Theatre Company will transport the audience into the two worlds of 18th century domesticity and the magic of the Beast's palace.

Steve Lewis, Director of the play and the College's Head of Higher Education and Adult Learning, says:

"The production has provided a catalyst for students and staff from right across the college to get involved. We've got Carpentry students building the set, Hair and Beauty students providing 'the look', a digital media student designing the back projections and Hospitality and Catering students providing the bar. Having only been together for eight weeks, the commitment and enthusiasm of the company is amazing and they can't wait to share the fantastic story of Beauty and the Beast with a live audience."

Student Gabi Hergert, who is playing 'Beauty' in the play, says:

'It's been quite a fast learning experience and quite full-on but it's been really fun to be involved in the play and to get to know everyone else in the cast.'

There will be two performances of the play at City College's Main Hall at Pelham Street, Brighton on Thursday December 3rd 2009 at 7.30 pm and Friday, December 4th at 7.30 pm.

Tickets: £6 (£4 students & concessions). Group discount ticket for 4 people: £15. For ticket information, call 01273 667744 or 01273 232638.
