New 'Top up' course for Hospitality & Events employees

22 July 2008

City College Brighton and Hove is offering a pioneering new course that will provide a degree qualification for those in the hospitality industry who have either ended their studies after HND/Foundation level or who have extensive experience of industry but no formal qualifications. The BA Hospitality and Events Top-Up Work-Based Course is being delivered via the 'work-based pathway' meaning that students study mainly - though not exclusively - from their workplace.

Research undertaken by the Sussex Learning Network suggests that there is considerable local demand for such a course and that Brighton is the ideal place to facilitate it. It has been highlighted that the course will mean considerable benefits both individually and collectively for Sussex's Hospitality and Events sector, where higher levels of skills and knowledge can only lead to a more successful industry.

One student who will be benefiting from the new course is Isobel Roberts, Events Manager at the Old Market in Hove:

'The good thing about this new course is that it allows people in full-time employment to still have the opportunity to continue their education. It's scheduled to take place so that I only have to be away from my workplace two days a month so it offers a much more flexible way of still learning with computer back-up, spending time with tutors and learning with other people in comparable jobs. The course modules focus on different areas within hospitality or events. It covers all sorts of things such as event design, marketing and other areas that relate to what I need to know for my business to help me in the future. It deals with a lot of contemporary issues and also the way things are likely to be in ten years so it's very relevant to the type of work I do.'

The course is recruiting now and begins in October. Those interested should contact Graham Atkins or Mark Clark on 01273 667713 or email BHAdmin@ccb.ac.uk.

For media enquiries, please call Brian Bell, Marketing Communications Officer, on 01273 667788 Ext. 488 or email bb1@ccb.ac.uk
