Music Technology students at City College Brighton and Hove have been working hard to complete a new compilation album showcasing their talent which they've simply entitled 'Brighton Records Volume 1'. The album, covering genres such as acoustic, electro, pop, hip-hop and dubstep, has been released on the College's student-run label, Brighton Records. The label was set up to help them gain an insight into the music industry and gain valuable experience in an extremely competitive marketplace. It also nurtures and promotes the College's emerging talent in music composition, recording and production.
Jason Murphy, City College's Curriculum Team Leader in Music & Journalism, says:

'Brighton Records' artists at work
'The purpose of the record label is to give the students a stepping stone into the real world of the music industry instead of just being an academic exercise. It enables them to have a taste of what it's really like to run a record label and have a commercial release of their own. This year, as part of the day-to-day managing and administration of the label, the students have started developing the Brighton Records brand in an organic way through online networking such as Facebook and Twitter as well as their traditional showcase gigs throughout the year. This will help them to reach an audience and also forge links with the local music industry. It's a proactive response to the changes in the music industry and is part of our ongoing plan to make Brighton Records bigger and better with each yearly release.'
Student Jennifer Wilson (21) says:
'I think it's an important part of what we do on the course because it shows people what we are capable of as musicians and performers. As well as being a fun project to be involved in, it also improves our confidence and it feels good to see all our hard work coming together as a finished product that we can get out there and promote.'
The 'Brighton Records Volume 1' album will be available in all good local record shops retailing at £5.99.
