Prize-winning Animator Gets Fatboy Gig Commission

6 December 2006

'Albatross Waltz', an animated film by City College Multimedia student Simon Carter, was the joint winner recently in the 'Student Show Reels' competition organised by Cinecity, the Brighton Film Festival. Cinecity offered young aspiring film-makers aged 16 and upwards the exciting opportunity to have their work shown at the Duke of York's Cinema. Out of 50 submissions, 23 films were selected for screening. A panel of professional film-makers provided feedback and there were prizes for the most promising achievements. Off the back of his win, Simon has now been commissioned to contribute to a massive event which has been the talk of Brighton and Hove in recent times?

Judge Simon Wilkinson, of film production company Junk TV, says:

'The quality of the animation and illustration in Simon's work made me want to see more, it was startlingly good - I wanted to see a full music video of that stuff. I've now commissioned Simon to create one of the five 60 second movies Junk TV are producing for the Fatboy Slim New Year's Day bash.'

Simon Carter says:

'It was fantastic just to see my work on a cinema screen, but to be voted joint winner and to receive such positive feedback from professional filmmakers was overwhelming. The course has really helped me, especially this second year where I've progressed so much so thanks to the help and guidance of my tutors at City College.'

Simon's tutor James Brocklehurst says:

"Simon showed promise from the start of the course in terms of his drawing and illustration skills. However, when he was shown the software package 'Adobe After Effects' and how he could create animated sequences from his still imagery, he took to it immediately and really ran with it! The sequence screened at the Duke of York's was his first real go at using these techniques, yet the results appear professional and are full of imaginative touches. It was great to see the work on the big screen and even better that Simon has secured a prestigious commission as a result."
