Art & Design students from City College Brighton and Hove have been involved in a collaborative fashion-design project using garments donated by Oxfam. The project culminated in 'Rags to Riches' - a free fashion show extravaganza at the Main Hall, Pelham Street, Brighton on Wednesday 10th May.
Students were asked to select one or two garments or accessories and analyse them, looking at overall shape, structural details, embellishment, fastenings, seams and fabric. They were also asked to consider the era in which the garments originally were made. This analysis gave students historical, contextual and costume research which helped them to develop the designs. Items of clothing were deconstructed and then reconstructed with reference to the research and chosen elements/structure of the garments.

Student Philippa Cooke says:
'The idea of recycling appeals to me as I'm really into eco-fashion. It was really interesting to get old clothes and be inspired to make something new from them. I'm getting loads of charity shop garments, re-designing them and researching into designers who've done this before.'
One of the tutors involved, Phil Bint, says:
'It's exciting to see how the students take a garment and change it. For me, every garment can provide a different challenge when I'm giving them technical input on how they can adapt it.'
Oxfam's John Nicholls says:
'With Oxfam being at the cutting-edge of recycling and green issues, it's great to see our clothes being recycled in such an imaginative way to create unique contemporary garments.'
