City College Brighton and Hove is one of five local education providers who are working collaboratively to provide a series of ‘First Step’ courses aimed at beating the recession at venues across the City. These courses, most of which are free of charge, are designed to provide skills such as such as IT, CV writing or interview techniques which can give participants the edge when job-hunting. For those thinking of changing career, there are also taster courses in construction skills, beauty or cookery. You can also find out how to feed your family for less, manage stress naturally or save money by doing your own home repairs. For example, the free Basic DIY course being run at City College East shows how to do basic home repairs such as painting and decorating, fitting locks or even hanging skirting boards or dado rails. Claire Brown, who took the course, says:
"I learnt how to do things properly which I’ve never done at home! I used to cut a lot of corners and make the best of a really bad situation whereas here I’ve learnt how to measure things and the correct tools to use so that’s been really useful. It also gives you a good taster so if you were thinking about getting into construction, you’d get an idea of what you’re good at."
