Sporting chance for apprentice boxers at City College

3 September 2010

City College Brighton and Hove has been selected as the only College in the South East to offer talented amateur boxers the opportunity to receive full time training whilst gaining a valuable educational qualification. The College is able to offer twenty places on the programme to elite and aspiring, male and female boxers aged sixteen to nineteen years old. This is thanks to a new programme developed by the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) and England Colleges Amateur Boxing Association (ECABA.

The Advanced Apprenticeships in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme has selected six colleges/further education providers in England to become designated High Performance Boxing Centres. They will receive a combination of educational opportunities and high performance boxing training and work towards a nationally recognised qualification over a period of two years.

Each high performance centre will have a full time coach leading the programme who will work closely with local boxers and their club coaches to help further develop each boxer to reach their full potential. The boxing and sports science training that is provided at the centre will be in addition to the training that goes on within the club. Through the apprenticeships, the ABAE hopes to provide talented young boxers the opportunity to fulfil their potential and progress into future England and GB international boxers, whilst also seeking to develop athletes in other areas such as sports science, sport development, elite coaching or sports administration and develop into the ABAE's leaders of the future.

Luke Hampton, City College's Team Leader of Sport and Public Services, says:

'We 're delighted that the ABAE has chosen City College to be the High Performance Centre for Boxing in the South East. Alongside the development of elite boxers, the other aim of the programme is to work with local clubs to improve the participation in boxing locally. So, the scheme is targeting boxing at both elite and grassroots level which is why we're so pleased to have been chosen as one of just six national centres.'

'Boxing is a great sport for teaching students the art of discipline, self-control and concentration. Also, to be successful in boxing and in education you need to have motivation, commitment and dedication. We hope that students will use the skills and qualities they learn in boxing to help them be successful in the future.'

Paul King Chief Executive of the ABAE says:

'The ABAE sees the implementation of the AASE programme as an essential part of our Long Term Athlete Development player pathway and legacy planning. This life-changing opportunity will also offer students the chance to qualify for external educational or equivalent vocational qualifications in a wide range of subjects, chosen by the individual with college guidance.'

Lewis Pendleton, the ABAE's National Women's and Education Sector Development Manager, says:

'The College was chosen because of its academic strengths and showed a clear commitment to amateur boxing, developing fantastic new boxing facilities here that we can build on in the future so that they'll become second to none. The fact that the College has got the ability to deliver on both an educational and sporting level gives young boxers in Brighton a real hope and aspiration to go as far as they want to go. The whole point behind this programme is that boxing apprentices here will have the opportunity to access high quality coaching that links straight into the England and GB programmes and if they're deemed good enough they can be selected and potentially go on to become Olympic medallists which is what we all hope for.'

Promising young boxer Jake Towse (19,) who attended the programme's first assessment day, says:

'I got the chance to spar and box with some very good lads and the facilities here are top class. The apprenticeship really appeals to me because it's brilliant to be able to combine boxing with education.'
