City College Brighton and Hove has won in three different categories in the inaugural Sussex Spring Awards to celebrate educational success in the region. For the first time, major players in the training and development world in Sussex have joined together to celebrate the best and brightest achievements in training, development and lifelong learning. The launch event and awards ceremony will be held on the 27th of April 2005 at the Corn Exchange in Brighton.
The Awards have been developed to promote and celebrate success as well as achievement in Sussex, giving some recognition to nominated Employers, Provider and Learners. The emphasis on the awards will be on both business and learner benefit specifically focusing on learning in the workplace.
The Provider Collaboration Award for the most effective model of educational collaboration in action was won by City College and Brighton Institute of Modern Music. City College also won the Skills for Life Strategy Award for the best organisational approach to Skills for Life training and development in Sussex. The Learner Achievement Award was won by City College Carpentry and Joinery student Richard Aldridge for excelling in the field of carpentry. Richard says:
'It was a real shock to win the award and I was really pleased. City College has helped me a lot. I started here when I'd just turned 16 and I've come a long way. The teachers and tutors have all been really supportive and helpful.'
Richard's tutor Dave Cotton says:
'Richard's always been very committed to the course. He's a very attentive student and doing equally well at work. I've spoken to his employer PD Harris on several occasions and they're very pleased with him. He's got great people skills and he's picking up a range of work experience which will take him right through NVQ Level 3.'
The Sussex Spring Awards have been organised by Further Education Sussex, an innovative partnership of Sussex colleges and their key partners whose aim is to further improve the experience of learners in the Sussex further education colleges through direct, effective action and ensuring maximum impact. FE Sussex has already gained a national reputation for innovation in the ways it carries out this mission. It is driven by the quality improvement agendas of the Sussex FE colleges, but it is an inclusive organisation, with partner members from Sussex Enterprise, the careers companies, the three local education authorities, and the Sussex Learning and Skills Council. This unique format ensures joined up thinking and coherent action.
