After an exciting inaugural year that has included competing in the national Dance Challenge, an acclaimed performance at the Sussex Spring Awards and regularly being in demand for guest performances at local secondary schools, City College Brighton and Hove's Street Jazz Dance course is currently recruiting for new students starting in September 2011. On the course, students develop their skills in a range of styles including hip-hop, musical theatre, can-can, Bollywood and flamenco.
Tutor Amy Ferguson, who has worked on Britain's Got Talent and The X-Factor, is keen to stress that being on the course has practical outcomes beyond the enjoyment aspect. 'On this course, students really improve their communication skills', says Amy. 'Academically-speaking, they become more analytical and through analysing dances, and studying other dancers' work, they learn how to create their own material in terms of choreographing duets and small group pieces. Career-wise, this course opens doors to being a professional dancer, dance teaching, leading workshops, starting dance schools, or running after-school clubs and because it's a Level 3 A-level equivalent course, it can also be a stepping stone to higher education.'

Street Jazz Dance at City College
'This course has really given me confidence in myself', says student Vicky Godefroy. 'Before I came to City College, I didn't necessarily think it was going to be a big deal but I love being on the course and it turns out that the happier you are the better you dance. There's a really down-to-earth atmosphere at the College and I've never known a group of girls who've got on so well. There are seven of us on this course and we all get on and confide in each other and we've never fallen out and that's so rare in this day and age. Now I'd like to take dancing to a professional level and I'm planning to use my qualification to find work when I'm travelling abroad.'
City College is holding an Open Event at its main campus on Pelham Street, Brighton on Saturday 25th June from 10am to 1pm where prospective students are invited to explore the full range of courses on offer and to talk to course lecturers and current students.
