Students Experience Glamour of TV's 'Captain's Table

18 October 2006

Glenda Bull and Louise Sullivan, two Catering and Hospitality students from City College Brighton and Hove, have taken part in a new TV series 'Dinner at the Captain's Table', an Anglo/American production by Snowbow that evokes a bygone era of glamour and luxury living.

In the series, the Chef and his assistant are challenged to recreate a four course dinner from a rare old menu that was actually used aboard one of the famous ocean liners of yesteryear. These great liners that sailed to every corner of the world during the golden age of shipping were often the very last word in luxury. The dinners that Glenda and Louise expertly served to guests were taken from menus once used aboard the old Queen Mary and the French liner Normandie. Both these ships were renowned for their fine food and silver service. For the rich and famous of the world to be seen dining at the Captain's Table aboard these great liners was a statement of their importance.

The 'Captain's Table' that Glenda and Louise served was hosted by the world's most well-known sea Captain today - Commodore Warwick, master of both the QE2 and the new QM2. Series Producer Des Cox says:

'The Captain's Table was laid with rare silverware and cutlery that was also taken from those great liners, just to add that special touch of authenticity. It was therefore crucial that the service provided matched the decor and I'm pleased to say that Glenda and Louise didn't let the side down one little bit with the excellent service they provided. We required the very highest standards of silver service and they were absolutely perfect.'

Student Glenda Bull says:

'It was really interesting to see how film crews work and it was also good to use the skills that we've learnt at College. I was a bit nervous when the cameras were rolling but the producer seemed really happy with how we served the guests. As for seeing myself on TV, that's going to be exciting but a bit strange too!'
