In the Art Foundation Fashion & Textiles section of the exhibition, two students have focused on the subject of waste. Sasha Gray-Crosby exhibit has utilised discarded materials to create a garment using textures and shapes inspired by meat and fish products that are thrown away by large retailers. Sasha says: 'I was shocked at the amount of food that’s wasted in supermarkets once the display date has passed and that it generally doesn’t go to food banks or charities.'
An exhibit by fellow student Lola Spinks, which she’s entitled ‘Pretty Rubbish’, focusses on waste within the fashion & textiles industry and how much goes to landfill each year. Lola says 'I wanted to create a piece that raised awareness about waste but in an accessible way. Initially it doesn’t look like it’s made out of waste but when you look closer you see that the bags are filled with rubbish. I hope it gets people thinking about how much they throw away each year.'
The End of Year Show is in the Trafalgar & York buildings on Pelham Street Brighton and will be open to the public on Friday 24th June 10am-5.00pm, Saturday 25th June 10am-2pm, Monday 27th June 10am-5pm and Tuesday 28th June 10am-8pm. Admission is free.
