Teenagers show their breakfast-making skills

9 February 2009

Students aged fifteen and sixteen recently displayed their culinary skills by making breakfast for nearly fifty local business people at The Gallery, the City College Brighton and Hove's training restaurant. The 'breakfast club' event was hosted by City Business Club - a networking organisation for local businesses organised by the College's City Business Skills department.

The students who cooked and served the full English breakfast are in their second year of a two year day release work related learning course in catering which will lead to a NVQ level 1 qualification. The business community was clearly impressed by the students' efforts. Phil Jones, of Phil Jones Training and Development, says:

'They've done a fantastic job. They were very pleasant and friendly and the food's great.'

Dave Rogers of Excell Telecommunications says:

'The breakfast was excellent and I was surprised that it was cooked by students who are still at school. I'm impressed that they got up so early at their age to do this.'

City College offers students such work-related learning courses through local schools when they are in year 9 and putting together their learning options for the final two years at school. Other courses on offer include Childcare, Hairdressing, Motor Vehicle Studies, Beauty, Cabin Crew and Construction. City College also work closely with Brighton and Hove City Council running additional Engagement Programmes for students in years 10 and 11.
