Tracey Emin Praises 'Brilliant' City College Artist

13 April 2005

17-year-old City College Art & Design student Gloria Ellis was one of the winners in a recent national competition organised by Red Bull. Red Bull's 'Art of Can' is an event which gives people the chance to unleash their inner creativity and see what a full can of Red Bull inspires them to create. The competition has no categories or boundaries other than the limits of an entrant's own creativity. Their entry can be a sculpture, a collage, a projection or even a film. The competition was judged by renowned artist Tracey Emin, presenter Sara Cox, art critic Nick Hackworth and fashion duo Basso & Brooke.

Judge Tracey Emin singled out Gloria's 'The Little Bear' for praise:

'All the pieces were winners, but it was actually third placing 'Little Bear' that got my strongest vote today - it was the piece that had the most pathos. Initially I felt sorry for it, but then when I looked at it again, I realised how brilliant it was!"

Gloria's tutor Emma Harrington says:

'It was fantastic that one of our students won a prize and I think Gloria is still shocked. She produced a very detailed piece of art based upon Goldilocks and the three bears, to which a lot of care and attention was paid to the detail within her 'bear'. Gloria is a very conscientious student and has progressed well on the course. We are all very proud of her success.'
