The 'Constructing Futures' construction training project at City College is offering pre-apprenticeship training for those looking for employment or an apprenticeship who left school in 2005 or 2006 and are still under 19. The offer is aimed at those who enjoy working and learning in a practical environment.
Alan Wright, Constructing Futures' Project Manager, says:

Constructing Futures at City College
'Over the next 10 years, the scale of planned development in Brighton and Hove is likely to exceed £2 billion pounds. The city currently doesn't have sufficient numbers of skilled workers to deliver this scale of development yet local unemployment is twice the regional average. This pre-apprenticeship training offer is part of our drive to do something about this critical skills shortage.'
Throughout this summer, from June to September, Constructing Futures are running a new programme (30 hours per week) to help prepare young people for the world of work and further training at their construction skills training centre in Wilson Avenue, East Brighton.
Those enrolled on the course will learn through carrying out practical tasks in carpentry, plastering, brickwork, tiling, plumbing and painting and decorating. Trainers will teach the basics of what is required and expected to succeed in a job/trade or on site. There will also be support to raise levels of English and Maths and teach job application and interview skills to prepare students for getting work.
The CSCS health & safety test, which is a ticket towards being able to work on site is part of the course curriculum. The course also covers some of the requirements of an apprenticeship framework to give a head start with any further training.
There will be work experience placements arranged with local companies for two weeks in August. Only a limited number of places are available on this special programme.
