Unwanted cars required for new Motor Vehicle facility

15 August 2011

With a brand new £795,000 state-of-the-art Motor Vehicle training area double the size of the previous facility opening in September, City College Brighton and Hove, recently graded ‘Good with Outstanding Qualities’ by Ofsted, is now putting the shout out to the local community for unwanted cars that students can practice their skills on. These cars will not be put on the road, will be used for teaching purposes only and will remain within the Motor Vehicle department. Smaller cars are preferred as they offer more manoeuvrability and the College is particularly keen to secure Ford Escorts or Fiestas, Peugeot 306 and 106, Volkswagen Golf Polo, Vauxhall Corsa and Fiat Puntos. However, any vehicle that can be used for teaching purposes will be considered.

'We’ve got around 200 students joining us in September and although we’ve got a variety of vehicles they can practice on, we could really do with some more cars for a facility this size', says course leader Steve Philliben. 'Anyone who is kind enough to donate an old car can feel that they’re contributing to the education of young people and also helping the College to train a skilled workforce for Brighton and Hove.'

The College has invested in a new workshop facility at its City College East campus as part of an overall drive to raise standards in teaching and learning. The 11-car workshop, designed to meet the needs of the modern day service technician, will offer MOT standard equipment such as a brake roller tester, rolling road dynamometer, tyre and engine bays, five ramps, modern IT facilities and an external valeting area.

If you are interested in donating a car to the students, please call City College’s Motor Vehicle Department on 01273 667788 ext 615 or email SP1@ccb.ac.uk
