Work-focussed training enhances culinary skills

14 April 2011

Students on a free work-focussed training course for the unemployed at City College Brighton and Hove recently planned, prepared and served an impressive 3-course meal, complete with silver service, for College staff as part of a 6-week Customer Service course.

The students were in the last week of the course on which they'd spent 3 weeks learning about the retail or tourism style of service, including a Welcome Host certificate, and 3 weeks learning about catering and hospitality, including a Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate.

'It was the first time most of them had any experience of anything like this, and they produced a fantastic meal', said External Projects Officer Simon Dyer. 'They were an excellent group who were a pleasure to work with and it was great to see that the course fired their imagination and got them really interested and engaged in gaining more training as well as improving their chances of getting back into employment.'

'It was a great experience doing this course and meeting new people. It's really helped me to get my confidence back when it comes to getting a job', said student Aaron Maher. 'The help I got throughout the course was outstanding. All the tutors have done an amazing job.'
