City College Brighton and Hove is offering local employers connected to the construction industry the opportunity to become involved in shaping the workforce of the future by providing placements for capable and motivated pupils. The placements give pupils a taste of real work alongside their school studies.
A Young Apprenticeship is a new 2-year programme for 14-16 year olds supported by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). It is aimed at pupils who would like the chance to experience workplace life in a supported way and who will benefit from building a strong foundation before moving on to an Apprenticeship at 16 or another progression route of their choice.

Young Apprenticeships - a new 2-year programme for 14-16 year olds
City College's Young Apprenticeship Co-coordinator/Lecturer Carolien Reynolds says:
'We're looking for employers who can allocate some of their time to the supervision and development of these students and can inspire and involve them - introducing them to new skills and experiences that are both age-appropriate and relate to their interest in construction.'
For employers who take on Young Apprentices, benefits include:
? enhancing professional development through coaching and training
? creating positive links with local educational and training institutions
? demonstrating and promoting a company's specialist skills and encouraging innovation
? supporting customer and public relations
? an opportunity to invest in and shape the workforce of the future.
For Health & Safety reasons, building sites may not be appropriate but any office, shop or outlet related to the construction industry such as demolition firms, architects, material suppliers, electrical, plumbers or quantity surveyors could be suitable. The College is also seeking people who work in any aspect of construction to give classroom talks to students.
