Former plumbing apprentice and young local employer Sam Bishop, who has been running his own increasingly successful business since he was just 19, has recently taken on two new apprentices and is urging other local employers to do likewise during Apprenticeship Week.
The aim of City College's ’50 in 5’ campaign is to encourage local employers to make an overall total of 50 pledges to take on an apprentice during the 5 day period Apprenticeship Week lasts from Monday 14th to Friday 18th March. Sam (28) says: 'By supporting 50 in 5, not only will employers be giving a young person a vital break, they’ll also be gaining a member of staff who’s going to be more loyal to the firm and who will be trained up in a way that meets their standards.'

Explaining why his Apprenticeship was so fundamental to his subsequent success, Sam adds: 'When I was employed as an apprentice and going out on jobs with my boss, I was able to see how everything works on the front line and got insights into how a business really works. Alongside the practical skills, you were learning about pricing up jobs and how to deal with a range of different customers which really provides a solid grounding in the trade.'
